The Bible and Poverty: Changing Mission for Good (6 sessions)     $25      Facilitator: Ryan Bonfiglio

How is poverty defined in the Bible and what is its opposite? Is poverty inevitable or solvable? Why does the church so often overlook the Bible’s overwhelming concern about poverty?  What role did economic injustice play in the ministry of the Prophets and in the life of Jesus? What connections do the Scriptures draw between material possessions and spiritual formation? In taking up these and related questions, emphasis will be placed on how church leaders can use biblical frameworks not only to diagnose traditional models of charity and outreach but also to develop more effective and just poverty solutions. This six-week class, taught by Ryan Bonfiglio, a member of the faculty at Emory’s Candler School of Theology, invites lay leaders at St. Luke’s to explore biblical views on and responses to material poverty.
